The iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority, in partnership with the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), successfully conducted a comprehensive two-day maritime compliance training programme on 26–27 November 2025 at the iSimangaliso Dredger Harbour office. The training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the iSimangaliso Environmental Compliance team, in collaboration with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, to ensure safer and more compliant vessel operations within the park.
The programme focused on deepening the team’s understanding of the legislation regulating the operation of boats and vessels, while also enhancing practical skills in conducting vessel inspections. This forms part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all vessels operating within the waters of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park adhere to strict safety and regulatory standards.
The partnership between SAMSA and iSimangaliso represents a major stride forward in improving maritime safety, operational compliance, and environmental protection within this World Heritage Site. By combining expertise, the two organisations continue to play a critical role in safeguarding the ecological integrity of one of South Africa’s most treasured natural environments.

The iSimangaliso Biodiversity Conservation Executive Manager, Mr Sibusiso Mbense, said this training signifies an important step in strengthening our enforcement capabilities and ensuring that all maritime activities within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park meet the highest standards of safety and compliance. Our collaboration with SAMSA reinforces our commitment to protecting this globally significant World Heritage Site while ensuring that visitors can enjoy a safe and well-managed marine environment.
The training was facilitated by SAMSA specialists Mr Lungelo Xaba and Ms Thulile Ndaba, whose expert guidance provided enforcement officers with valuable insights and practical techniques for effective maritime inspections. A key outcome of the programme is that qualifying enforcement officers will now be issued official appointment letters and identification cards by SAMSA. This formal recognition empowers officers to execute enforcement duties with full authority, ensuring that compliance and safety measures are upheld across all maritime activities in the park.
