iSimangaliso Wetland Park Internal Rule 06/2011: Prohibition on Catching & Killing of ‘Bottom Fish’ within Restricted and Controlled Offshore Zones of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Description

No bottom fish (non pelagic species) may be caught or killed within the controlled and restricted zones of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, which area includes the offshore area (from the high water mark extending to 3 nautical miles out to sea) between the N3 beacon at Cape Vidal and the southern boundary of the park at Railway Ledges. The following applies:

  • Only pelagic bony fish from the families of Scombridae (Tuna and Mackerel spp), Carangidae (King Fish spp), Pomatomidae (Shad family), Coryphaenidae (Dorado), Rachycentridae (Prodigal Son), Xiphiidae (Swordfish), /stiophoridae (Sailfish and Marlin spp), and Sphyraenidae (Barracuda spp) may be caught and boated.
  • Pelagic cartilaginous fish from the families Carcharinidae, /suridae, Sphymidae, Afopiidae and Odontaspididae may be caught but may not be boated or killed and must be released immediately.
  • Any species of fish caught that do not belong to the families described above, must be released in an appropriate manner to ensure survivability of the fish.
  • The provisions of the Marine Living Resources Act, 1998 (Act No. 18 of 1998) (MLRA) and associated regulations continue to apply to the capture/fishing of pelagic fish. These include, but are not limited to, bag/size limits, recreational angling licences, fishing methods/equipment, launch sites and compliance requirements.
