Whale season is back in iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Wonders never ends at iSimangaliso Wetland Park. In South Africa, St. Lucia in the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is amongst the pre-eminent areas for whale watching. It is that season of the return of the majestic giants of the ocean to the warm water of St. Lucia in iSimangaliso Wetland Park. As from June to November, Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales migrate to these coastal water. Visitors all across the globe are invited to come and experience these wonders, offering spectacular views and unforgettable moments.
Adult Humpback whale is generally 14-15M (approximately 46-49 Ft). Females are usually longer than males. They can weigh as much as 30 Elephants, the average weight for these gentle giants is 200,000 to 300,000 pounds (90,000 to 136,000 kilograms). South Africa is one of the best destinations worldwide for watching whales, during this period, whales are sometime seen with calves, as they use South African waters for calving and rearing their young. The whale season is predictable as whales often so close to shore.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park has fragile combination of natural beauty and social diversity. The late former President Nelson Mandela in his speech marking the historic 2002 reintroduction of Elephants in the Eastern Shores of the Lake St Lucia said, “The Wetland Park must be the only place on the globe where the World’s oldest land mammal (the Rhinoceros) and the World’s biggest terrestrial mammal (the Elephant) share an ecosystem with the World’s oldest Fish (the Coelacanth) and the World’s biggest marine mammal (the Whale)”.
