Within its boundaries lie three major lake systems, all designated Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance, Africa’s largest estuarine system, eight interlinking ecosystems, ancient 700-year-old fishing traditions, most of the country’s remaining swamp forests, more than 530 bird species, and towering 25,000-year-old coastal dunes – among the highest on Earth.
